Dear Voiceless,
I waited until after Iâd published your last article to send you this because I didnât want you to think I expected you to alter your opinion based on what Iâm about to say. I wanted you to understand that you are entitled to your views and I value them enough that I want to publish them without attempting to change them or make them, in some way, align more closely to my own. So I have published your last piece, and weâve been monitoring the response to it, and so far it hasnât come across as being as inflammatory as the previous one, which I imagine you are pleased about. Although this could also be because of recent events overshadowing it.
What I want to say is that Iâm concerned you might be glossing over the very real, unequivocal violence that has been occurring in Great Britain over the last few months. In making your statements about Islamophobia and refugees, etc., Iâm afraid you might be downplaying the horrific violence that is happening on our streets. There is a sense here among some of my colleagues at the magazine that you might be trivializing, or splitting hairs even, when talking about this issue.
Real people have died in these attacks. Real people with families and lives and jobs and friends. People who were here last week and are now suddenly not. And now theyâre saying that one of the attackers might have been an asylum seeker at one point. So, I think that maybe you need to be careful of making sweeping statements about how we shouldnât fear Muslim refugees because they donât have the capacity for violence or something.
These are just some things to keep in mind as you compose future articles.
Best,
Josie
